Jinx claims, "We have all of... 7? Active regular combatants in game at the moment? And the current rate of bites is 2 or greater per RL week. And given that the consequences are basically career-ending for combatants if not life-ending, that seems like a lot."

Famine states, "We definitely want there to be some danger with it, and fear of contracting the disease, but we definitely don't want multiple a week."

Benny claims, "I don't think it's so much that you can't fight with one arm as that at this rate you may not have even that for very long. Even a .01 percent chance is an inevitability given enough iterations. And the way scavving and combat is currently set up, endless iterations is baked in."

Laine states, "But it's also other stuff- the character plays the guitar, for example"

Famine states, "It's supposed to be a very low chance of a bite, then even lower chance at it giving the disease."

Famine states, "Chance will be there regardless of peril rating. The issue is that it's happening too frequently."

Jinx says, "Right. I agree with danger and etc. But I sort of feel like it's excessively punishing, too, because the more you fight, the more scavving you do, etc, the more your chances to get bitten, which actively discourages doing these things. And what I think happens is that even though it SEEMS like a super low chance, like I don't know, you set it codedly to be 0.0001percent, but people are going out and getting attempted bites upwards of 20-40 times per day sometimes."

NotChloe claims, "Im happy to be grabbed sometime if you wanna test how often it ends up happening staff. Just to check it really is a low chance."

Villainess says, "If someone's wearing high quality armor in the given location though, that's somewhat akin to like... even an animal bite going through something like (albeit scrap metal) plate armor, which would be... unlikely."

NotChloe inquires, "Biting only happens when you get the 'attempts to bite' attack right?"

Villainess claims, "I'd think it would need to be conditional in some way."

NotChloe says, "Tbf I found as a 74 74 combat character basic zombies and even woolies boss were kinda never gonna danger you. Bites should be a risk imo. It is a survival game so cant be just like super safe."

Jinx states, "Again, I do not disagree. But losing 2 limbs per RL week on a low population game is really really unsustainable."

Ash states, "I think I agree there. Twice in a week is a bit much. Looking at the metric I guess it's pretty striking low"

Benny says, "Yeah I think this is basically two distinct issues - one, that this person is maximized as a combatant, and so should the bites get through plate armor on someone with max defense? and two, every dedicated combatant and scavver will inevitably lose limbs even if the percent chance is extremely low, in a system where repetition and grinding is baked in to the loop."

Villainess says, "I wouldn't suggest it be super safe, it wasn't even super safe in MY time, but I also don't think a human corpse should be biting through top quality armor just like in randomly-occurring fashion."

Famine states, "I think bites should be scary for anyone, no matter how well armored and trained you are, because that's sort of just the reality of a zombie apocalypse. That said, I can understand reducing the chance significantly."

NotChloe wonders, "And I say this as someone who doesnt play noncoms. I agree 2 a week is scary but like... is it actually gonna average that? We only have 1 week of data to go ocer"

Villainess states, "I think it needs to be conditional because one zombie against, for example, three skilled combatants that have armor on and weapons that have more reach than a human corpse can even possibly have, should be trivial."

Famine states, "I think the thing that makes it rough is that each fight has a potential for 3 attacks per round which means 3 rolls on the chances per round if it's based on just attack."

Villainess claims, "If five zombies can possibly bite ONE fully armed veteran, sure, that's possible."

Ash states, "Personally I kiiinda feel like armor should in the bite location should prevent it. Maybe not entirely, but it's hard to bite through armor. Maybe lessen the chance significantly for armor in the target location to represent the slim possibility of it finding a seam."

Rachel says, "I would think that armor (especially armor in excellent shape) would reduce the chances considerably for the given wear slot, yeah."

Jinx states, "I'm just looking at it from a sustainability pov. We do not have a huge playerbase for the meatgrinder."

NotChloe states, "I mean, anyone being one shot by a zombie does fit zombies as a threat in media etc. But you all raise good points and I honestly dont know what healthier for theme and game alike."

Benny says, "Yeah and also the behaviors that this kindo f problem would contribute to - combat robot alts you don't care about or engage in stories with, avoidance of casual scavving by semi-combatants, etc. We don't want that, I don't think, but it's the kind of thing that a high bite rate in the playerbase is likely to encourage."

Rachel states, "And I agree, I don't want combatants to feel like no matter how prepared they are, the odds are against them because of the frequency of bites. We need folks willing to take risks."

Famine claims, "Well, bites aren't gonna be going away. They're something we've talked about since the game opened as a thing. Just need to find a fun balance."

Benny states, "Also, I want storied, complicated PCs who aren't necessarily hardened combat monsters to be encouraged to participate in scavving, not discouraged from it, honestly. I don't see any advantage to forcig people who go outside to put all their eggs in the combat basket. And I don't think that making every combat possibly remove your limb from you is the best way to spice up combat. Like, the combat does need spicing up but I would argue that's not the way, and would cause more problems than it solved."

Pointy trails off, "If it's okay I wouldn't mind going first because I might need to tap out soon..."

Ash states to Famine, "Sounds like there's agreement there. Folks want the possibility of the danger, but it just feels like a bit much right now."

Famine says, "If you have an issue causing you to have to be inactive with your faction, such as being literally concussed, send staff a pboard and we'll see what we can do for it. Typically, yes, eventually you would lose the faction due to inactivity."

Rachel states, "I think those of us who have been playing in this space a while don't really differentiate that much between player and staff-driven events. The events are there to be roleplayed about either way, and the more the merrier."

Famine states, "Alrighty, Reza's turn."

Sarah nods.

Reza So the "other half" of the issue that I wanted to bring up was about body horror and consent. While the graphic command can be used to tone down the content in the scene, and the amputation itself includes a coded consent check, I realized, as it was happening, that being forced to choose between death and dismemberment, while very exciting and dramatic for some players, could feel coercive for others who are uncomfortable not necessarily with the potential for gore but with the violation of bodily integrity, which they must accept if they wish to continue playing their character.
An argument could be made that if you are not comfortable with that as a possibility, then don't go out "in the field" where that might happen, but that feels at odds with my experience of the game. There's a lot of fun, creepy content that I'd hate to see people locked out of because they don't want to take their chances, however slim, of getting effectively one-shotted in P1 (which being bitten is if amputation is off the table).

My proposal was to make bites contingent on opt-in status or another flag. I understand that bites are thematic, and if you're into it, and like the added element of risk you can turn it on for yourself, and if there's a concern that no one would turn it on, then I'm inclined to ask if we really want to foist something on people that no one seems to want

Laine exclaims to Famine, "Yeah, thanks- I didn't realise raiders could be spawned, so that's helpful to know!"

Sarah says, "Like maybe you opt into bites in the nanny"

Laine exclaims, "Er, brill!"

NotChloe says, "Optin for bites actually could be an interesting idea. Maybe if you are opted out then instead of getting an infection you take more damage from the 'bite'"

Rachel claims, "This comes back to my question about the progression of the disease."

Ash states, "It could actually kind of resolve a good amount of the percentage issues and it being a potentially "too much" mechanic for a not insignificant number of us to make it optin."

NotChloe states, "But that may be hella hard to code"

Ash inquires to Rachel, "What was that question?"

Reza claims, "I like that NC, that a bite hit should be "worse""

Famine states, "If it's an opt-in thing, I'd still probably reduce the current chances."

Rachel says, "Whether this could be mitigated if people had more of a sense for when they're infected and need to amputate vs proactive amputation? I think earlier it was stated that actual infection rates are pretty low even if bitten."

Sarah nods.

Ash states, "Something else that could work is making opting out of bites be more in line with opting out of the body horror aspect of amputation, requiring a relatively tough to make herbalism recipe to cure."

Ash nods at Rachel.

Sarah nods at Ash.

Laine claims, "More bites that don't necessarily lead to infection would definitely be fun"

Rachel claims to Ash, "That could also work, yeah."

Benny states, "Just want to say I think the flag shouldn't be permanent or locked in, for my own two cents. LIke everything else on this game, including sdesc, including the sdesc of my furniture, is alterable at any time. It feels out of keeping with the general tone to make it something you can't negotiate as you go along, depending on what you learn and how you are feeling that day. But I also agree it's fine to introduce other comparable penalties for landed bites if you are opt out."

Benny states, "YES LAINE"

Rachel claims, "I like anything that gets the community to rally together."

Famine claims to Ash, "I remember previously we talked about survivor resistance potentially having the late stages of the virus have a chance to recede if under care of a doctor. Maybe don't make it a full cure, but instead have it be a concoction that -reduces- it."

Ash questions to Rachel, "Pointless history time!: Zombies would show you they were trying to bite you since we opened, but the percentage chance to actually succeed was so low the math actually somehow nulled itself out, which caused it to never occur until about a week ago when how the percentage is calculated was fixed. It's VERY obvious when someone is infected, it just never happened before so I think the impression was very much "all these bites are happening but we've never seen the other message, so I'm assuming it's the same in both cases"?"

Benny states, "What we need is bites where WE DON'T KNOW if the person is infected ICly"

Rachel nods at Ash.

Rachel says, "I think there's just a lot of uncertainty around how it works, so people are filling in the blanks with worry for their fellow players."

Benny claims, "I would love to RP around not konwing if my buddy is infected >.> There are so many possible IC responses to that prompt. And OOCly they might know that they have opted out but that doesn't mean they can't RP along and have the stories of people thinking they could be infected."

Ash claims, "Zombies attempt to bite people periodically throughout combat with them, with a likelihood of them giving it a try based on a cycling chance - not always consistent, designed so folks can plan around poor Community Health to probably stay in camp and do the RP thing rather than go out for much short of emergency supplies during that cycle. From there, same deal for the infection rate - bite percentage, if that's successful, then it rolls again to check if it managed to infect the target. "

Rachel says, "So what if it progressed more like a regular disease and there were options to cure or stop it before it reached stage 3? Whether amputation or some hard-to-get medicine."

Ash states, "So I think my perspective on all this stuff is probably best summarized as things should be scary, there should be reasons represented by the world state to consider it not safe enough to leave camp at one time another, but this should be predictable enough on the player level that it's not a surprise or willy-nilly."

NotChloe states, "One issue is if we have a way outside of tasks to raise metrics they'll never be low. Whicj defeats their point. Though there are many ways this could be avoided."

Benny nods.

Famine claims, "I'm not sure if I'm in agreement on the cure. Chance to cure maybe, but a cure kind of goes against the zombie outbreak theme."
